Depression is one of the most crippling disorders. It consumes people both physically and emotionally. Producing feelings of hopeless, apathy, and being out of control. The disorder gnaws at your very essence, wearing people down to a nub. One can shut loved ones out at the point they need support most. Previous passions become a struggle to endure. You don’t want to be a burden, but living becomes so hard and you don’t know how to ask or receive help.
It can feel insurmountable to socialize. Time moves slowly in your bed and it can be a chore to merely get out of bed, let alone shower and be present in your life. Focus fades and you just want to sleep because it’s the only way to avoid the dark feelings.
You can live again
It takes so much strength to pick yourself up again. But do what you must, to take those first steps out of bed, to get dressed, and get yourself to a therapist. Talking about your feelings helps. Just as it takes times for depression’s tentacles to take hold, freeing yourself from this pain, won’t happen overnight. Depression can make it difficult to make decisions, especially how to take steps forward from the pain and your old habits. Working with a therapist can help you form healthier patterns and notice the blessings you have in your life, no matter how small they may feel at the time.
With patience and determination, you can keep moving forward. Take inspiration in the fighters that have blazed the trail before you. Fight with a tenacity that they have done previously. When you need encouragement or support turn to the people that love you the most. However, also remember to be your biggest cheerleader. There is a reason you are alive. Depression is not a means to seek attention. It’s a disorder that requires a comprehensive battleplan and army to fight. Do what you can to pick yourself back up and find solid footing. Keep fighting and preserving. With time, hard work, and grace you will regain your life, and smile, again. I believe in you.
